“When President Bush travels to Mexico this week, Mexican President Fox has the opportunity to help lead the world out of one of its most immoral and destructive wars — the war on drugs. The drug war, as Fox well knows, has produced nothing but failure, death, destruction, and corruption within the Mexican government. Already one Latin American president is calling for an end to the drug war–Uruguay’s president, Jorge Batlle, who recently told the New York Times, ‘I don’t know if drugs kill more than alcohol or tobacco, but I know they kill thousands on the battlefields of Colombia.’ Asked what the solution was to Colombia’s civil war, Battle responded, ‘Legalize drugs and bring Colombia into NAFTA.’ Batlle argued that drug legalization would lower drug prices and cut into the drug cartels’ profits. Fox should followBatlle’s lead and tell Bush that it’s time to end the death, destruction, and corruption by ending the war on drugs.”
