“Republicans have once again showed their hypocritical, compromising stripes. Republican House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert has written a letter to President Clinton offering his full support for a one-dollar increase in the minimum wage, a government program that every reputable economist recognizes renders an economic attack against those at the bottom of the economic ladder. After the Republican convention, South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham suggested that such compromises are necessary to increase the chances of Republicans’ winning control of both the Congress and the presidency. Of course it’s just another example of what Republicans have done so well for decades: sell their integrity and principles in return for political power. Of course, I’m sure that Republican candidates, who also support Social Security, Medicare, the drug war, the war on immigrants, and public schooling, will continue to regal us with their bromides about the importance of ‘free enterprise, private property, and limited government.
