“The Supreme Court will soon decide Boy Scouts of America v. James Dale, a case that will determine whether the Boy Scouts can exclude a homosexual from their organization. Many people may find the Boy Scouts’ policy of excluding homosexuals repugnant, but is it necessarily an ignorant, negative policy? Certainly the Boy Scouts do not advocate violence or persecution against homosexuals — and Melanie Kirkpatrick, in the Wall Street Journal, makes an excellent point: If every organization and group is legally bound to diversity, in the end, all groups are the same and true diversity is erased. Will homosexuals want religious fundamentalists infiltrating their organizations and attempting to “save their souls”? Will the Ku Klux Klan enjoy lighting candles for Kwanzaa to appease their black members? Put simply, people should be free to associate with whomever they care to so long as the association is voluntary and peaceful. The Boy Scouts is a private group and has every right to include and exclude as it sees fit.”
