There are a million American citizens living in Mexico. What’s up with that? Don’t they love America? Aren’t they patriots? What are they doing living down there instead of up here?
Word is that many of them are refusing to assimilate. They are not learning to speak Spanish. They continue to associate with each other rather than with the Mexican people. They are eating burgers instead of enchiladas. They are rooting for American sports teams. They are voting in American elections. They are spending their money in Mexico rather than here in the United States. They are keeping their money in American banks. And they are retaining their American citizenship rather than becoming Mexican citizens!
Should President Trump permit them to do this? Aren’t the types of arguments that Trump uses against illegal immigrants–that they’re not assimilating, not learning English, sending their money back home, etc. etc.?
Oh, and there is something else to consider. All those million Americans are clearly unaware that they are living a very precarious and dangerous existence. They obviously don’t know that they are living, according to Trump, among countless invaders, rapists, murderers, and robbers.
Isn’t that why Trump wants to build his Berlin Wall along the U.S.-Mexico border — to keep out all those invaders, rapists, murderers, and robbers from Mexico? Isn’t that why he has sent U.S. troops to the border — to protect us Americans from those violent people who are coming to get us?
Yet, here are Americans who are living south of the border — yes, south! As in south of Trump’s wished-for Berlin Wall. If it’s unsafe for Americans to be living here in the United States without Trump’s Wall, imagine what it must be like to live south of the wall. Somebody needs to tell those Americans that they are living in the midst of invaders, rapists, murderers, and robbers. They need to come home fast!
Doesn’t Trump feel that he’s been elected daddy of the American people? Isn’t that why he has initiated trade wars against China and others — to protect his adult American children from unfair competition from foreigners, including the farmers who Trump has now put on welfare because his trade wars are sending them into bankruptcy.
Well, aren’t those million Americans living in Mexico his children too? Doesn’t he have a responsibility to take care of them also? Shouldn’t he order them to come back to the United States for their own good and the good of our country? Doesn’t he get angry when American businesses decide to move their operations to Mexico and threaten them with sanctions if they don’t change their minds? All that Trump has to do is declare an emergency, remind people that he’s the commander in chief, and issue his executive decree commanding those Americans to return home.
But I say: Leave those Americans alone. They are pursuing happiness in their own way. So what if they’re not assimilating. So what if they aren’t learning Spanish. So what if they are hanging out among themselves. So what if they’re spending their money down there in Mexico. So what if they’re rooting for American sports teams. So what if they’re voting back here at home. So what if they’re retaining their U.S. citizenship. Why should this be any business of Trump or any other U.S. official?
By the same token, I say leave foreigners living here in the United States alone, for the same reasons. As the American Declaration of Independence points out, foreigners have as much right to pursue happiness in their own way as everyone else.
