“The Food and Drug Administration is contemplating whether to allow Cygnus, Inc. to market its new product, GlucoWatch, which can measure a diabetic’s glucose level without having to draw blood. Its an innovation that enables more frequent and less painful checking. GlucoWatch is not 100% accurate under certain conditions, and the FDA wants to regulate the device’s use if it is approved. Why should diabetics be required to prick themselves several times a day instead of having the right to use Cygnus’ new product? Diabetics know the risks of their condition, and Cygnus would advise them of the imitations of GlucoWatch. Why should government officials have the power to make this decision? Companies and consumers can regulate themselves and their own blood sugar. The FDA ought to butt out or, better yet, dissolve itself.”
