A Call for “Do-Nothing” Presidents Without Legacies

by
Some in the news media and editorial page pundits are aghast that many of President Donald Trump’s executive orders and legislative proposals sent off to the United States Congress represent an attempt to undue the presidential “legacy” of Barack Obama.  The question is, why should it be presumed that presidents need to have policy legacies to leave behind after their term in office has ended? In this particular case, many of those on the political “left” are focused on the proposals coming out of the Trump White House to repeal and replace ObamaCare – the (un)Affordable Care Act – as well as “climate change” legislation and international agreements, land use and mining regulations, and the Iran nuclear armaments deal. Not All Presidential Legacies are “Equal” in the Eyes of the Pundits An interesting question is whether the news pundits would be in the same public policy uproar if an immediately preceding president had been a classical liberal or libertarian and had left ...

Isolationism and Open Borders

by
In an implicit rebuke of President Trump, former President Bush delivered a speech this week in which he warned against “isolationism sentiments.” Isolationist sentiments? Is he kidding? Don’t make me laugh. Trump has made it very clear that he is firmly committed to continuing the forever wars that Bush launched in Afghanistan and Iraq more than 15 years ago and Bush’s perpetual “war on terrorism,” which he used to justify the adoption of such totalitarian powers as indefinite detention, torture, and assassination. Trump has taken actions that have brought the United States dangerously close to war with North Korea and Iran. He also intends to continue America’s participation in the old Cold War dinosaur known as NATO, which succeeded in bringing about a new Cold War with Russia. He favors the expansion of U.S. military prowess all over the world, most recently reflected by U.S. troops being killed in Africa. Surrounding himself with generals, Trump has effectively been absorbed into the ...

by
Anyone who cares for someone with a developmental disability, as well as for disabled people themselves every day in fear that their behavior will be misconstrued as suspicious, intoxicated or hostile by law enforcement. —Steve Silberman, The New York Times Life in the American police state is an endless series of don’ts delivered at the end of a loaded gun: don’t talk back to police officers, don’t even think about defending yourself against a SWAT team raid (of which there are 80,000 every year), don’t run when a cop is nearby lest you be mistaken for a fleeing criminal, don’t carry a cane lest it be mistaken for a gun, don’t expect privacy in public, don’t let your kids walk to the playground alone, don’t engage in nonviolent protest near where a government official might pass, don’t try to grow vegetables in your front yard, don’t play music for tips in a metro station, don’t ...

The Mainstream Media’s Deference to Authority in the JFK Assassination

by
I just finished watching an interesting documentary film entitled The Searchers by Randolph Benson, who teaches at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. The film focuses on private researchers during the aftermath of the JFK assassination who have questioned and investigated the official narrative put out by the Warren Commission and the Washington, D.C., establishment. According to ...
